The mystery grows when Jean Carlos researches the history of his school for a report and learns that there was a fire there years earlier that resulted in the death of a small child. He also discovers that his father didnt abandon his family, but was instead jailed for the crime. All the while, Jean Carlos develops a close relationship with his sister, Jennifer, who is abused by their mother and kept in the attic. While nurturing his sister, Jean Carlos internalizes her pain from abuse and struggles with his inner desire to protect her. He knows involving the authorities will condemn them both to DYFS and foster care, like his friend Tony, and, the incarceration of their mother. Jean Carlos struggles with a torturous choice of saving his sister from his abusing mother or letting the abuse continue and escalate. Jean Carlos searches for the right choice. His agonizing decision is the key to unraveling the mysterious fires and deaths.
